YAB Prime Minister Lauds Axiata as the “Regional Champion with the Right Heart” in Achieving the Nation’s Digital Agenda

Launches cashless ecosystem for Malaysia through Axiata Digital’s Boost e-wallet



KUALA LUMPUR, 23 FEBRUARY 2018 – At the inaugural Axiata Group Berhad (Axiata or Group) Townhall staged at the Axiata Arena with over 1000 Axiata and Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom) employees as well as partners, investees and beneficiaries, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia today witnessed the launch of the cashless ecosystem for Malaysia through Boost in conjunction with some of its partners such as SME Corp, AmBank, PLUS, UTM and UiTM. This milestone partnership will serve to expand the cashless ecosystem in Malaysia, and enable as many local businesses to tap into the card- less, cashless mobile electronic wallet lifestyle.

Acknowledging Axiata as one of the leading drivers of Malaysia’s digital economy, YAB Prime Minister expressed his support of the Group in spearheading innovative digital and financial inclusion initiatives, especially in addressing small and micro businesses in Malaysia.

Hosted by Tan Sri Datuk Wira Azman Hj. Mokhtar, Chairman of Axiata and Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, President and Group CEO of Axiata, during a two-hour engagement session themed “Regional Champion with a Digital Vision, Keeping Malaysia at Heart”, YAB Prime Minister took the opportunity to walk through the Axiata showcase where teams demonstrated new, creative and disruptive technologies and solutions.

Some of the innovative services on display included Axiata Digital’s e-wallet service, Boost, showcasing a card-less low-cost ATM kiosk that aims to serve the underserved; Axiata Business Services’ universal smart tracker device enabling location tracking solutions, two- way voice communication and panic button alert; and edotco Group’s energy efficient use of fibre cells and bamboo towers to reduce emissions and carbon footprint.

Axiata also shared its initiatives to assist local digital entrepreneurs under its Axiata Digital Innovation Fund (ADIF), such as drone technology for data collection and analytics service and the use of mobile technology to promote safer driving behavior by rewarding owners with lower insurance premiums.

Tan Sri Datuk Wira Azman Mokhtar said: “In line with the Prime Minister’s call for Malaysian corporations to be prepared for change, as the nation’s driver of innovation and advanced technologies, Axiata is committed in its vision to transform Malaysia into a competitive digital and financially inclusive economy.”

The Group later presented on some of its key initiatives in support of the government’s sustainable, inclusive and equitable growth agenda. Under the Baiti Jannati programme, YAB PM expressed his appreciation at the opportunity to meet with Puan Kasmabuti binti Ahmad (67 years old) from Precinct 9, Putrajaya as he handed over the house keys for the family’s first home in Projek Perumahan Rakyat, Wilayah Persekutuan.

A collaboration between Celcom with the Ministry of Federal Territories, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and other federal agencies and foundations, Baiti Jannati has handed 27 houses over to deserving families and recipients in Wilayah Persekutuan since its inception in June 2017.

Tan Sri Jamaludin expressed his highest gratitude to the Prime Minister and government for the continued support and trust, adding: “As we continue to grow and make a difference in Malaysia and the markets where we operate, we are grateful to the Prime Minister for personally championing our cause.”

“Since our inception in 2008, Axiata’s revenue has grown more than double while market cap grew almost two-fold. We have also provided dividends amounting to RM12.1 billion and contributed close to RM9.7 billion in tax, spectrum and license fees.”

“We consistently go beyond our commercial objectives – especially in talent development, Bumiputera Empowerment Agenda, vendor and entrepreneurial development, and more recently in financial inclusion. As a Malaysian GLC, it is our duty and privilege to serve the underserved and contribute to the larger goals of the nation.”
